Fire damage doesn’t just happen in homes, it can happen to commercial properties as well. Restaurants are no exception. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there are around 8, 000 fires at restaurants each year. As a result of these fires, there are around 115 injuries, and $245 million+ in property damage for restaurants across the country. So, as a restaurant owner, how do you keep your customers, employees, and property safe from fire damage? Here are some helpful tips on restaurant fire damage prevention and how to handle a fire in your restaurant.
Train your Employees
Part of any successful fire prevention plan is to always be ready for an emergency. It’s important that you have an emergency evacuation plan in place in case of a fire or another emergency. Keep the plan written out in a place where everyone can access it and practice it at least twice a year. Make sure every employee knows where the fire extinguishers and power sources are located and where they should store all flammable materials.
It’s also important that your team knows about each different type of fire and how to extinguish them. For example, you should never throw water on a grease fire. Appliances and other equipment should be inspected every few months by a professional to make sure everything is in working order.
Keep Your Space Neat and Tidy
A messy and unorganized kitchen is one of the leading causes of restaurant fires. To keep your space free of fire hazards it’s important for your team to place things back where they belong after they are used. If you have any employees who smoke, make sure that they smoke outdoors and always put their cigarettes out. For the safety of your customers and employees, you should also make sure all exit signs are properly labeled and there is a clear path to them at all times in case of an emergency.
