4 Ways to Prepare for Storm Damage and Flooding

9/6/2018 (Permalink)

A 2017 report from the Economist says that the likelihood of floods, even in low-risk areas, is increasing due to climate change. If it rains, flooding is possible.

So what is a flood? By its legal definition, a flood is when two (or more) properties or acres have been wholly or partly submerged in water.

But when you’re facing a flood, you won’t care about the legal definition. You’ll care about personal safety, property damage, and restoration.

So in the event of a flood, here are some simple steps for preparation.

###Risk Geography - how close you are to the coast and the type of land your property sits on both affect your risk of flooding. To learn about your area’s flood risk, contact the local government or FEMA. Knowledge is power, especially in an emergency. Learn the risk in order to prepare appropriately. For the South Bronx area, start here.

A weather radio is also a good way to be informed about imminent flood risks.

###Prepare Every home should be equipped with an emergency preparedness kit - and every car and office. The purpose of the kit may change how it is stocked, but it’s important to store important documents and medications, etc., in a waterproof case. Include extra food and water supplies. Fresh water is especially important in the event of a flood, because flood waters contaminate normal water sources.

If you need help packing your emergency kit, read this.

###Power Flooding caused by a severe storm can potentially knock out the power grid. Having a generator in your home means having a reliable power source. For a guide on how to purchase a generator, start here.

Water conducts electricity in dangerous ways. If possible, move appliances to drier and safer ground before a storm hits.

###Evacuate An evacuation order is often issued if a storm is a big enough threat. Prepare for this by becoming familiar with the local government’s evacuation policy. This plan can be used to create an evacuation plan for everyone in your household. Include emergency communication modes in this plan. Everyone should practice evacuating until the plan has been memorized.

Remember, high flood waters conceal damage caused by currents and high winds. Always be cautious.

When the flood waters recede, you’ll be eager to return home as soon as possible. SERVPRO® of South Bronx is always ready to help with expert restoration services.
