Protecting Your Property From Wind Damage Due to Storms | SERVPRO of South Bronx

11/26/2018 (Permalink)

Damaging winds are one of the most concerning threats that can accompany severe storms. These winds can take you by surprise and have long-term impacts to structures.

Wind Damage Basics

Traditionally, damaging winds are considered those with wind speeds exceeding 50–60 mph and can stem from a strong thunderstorm as well as tornadoes and hurricanes. You will commonly hear damaging winds referred to as “straight-line” winds, which differentiates them from tornado wind damage.

Because straight-line winds can cause loose objects on properties to become projectiles, they can be extremely destructive. Windows and the roof are notorious for taking the brunt of this damage. If the damage is extensive, it will result in water damage as the inside of the home becomes more vulnerable as the outside elements come in through the damaged windows and roofs.

If you are living in a thunderstorm-prone area, you can be at risk from damaging winds. There are some structures such as mobile homes that are especially at risk even if they are anchored and could be seriously damaged in winds gusting over 80 mph.

Ways to Protect Your Home

Let’s check out some ways to protect your property from damaging winds. Keep in mind the “Two R’s”: reinforce and remove.

  • Your garage door should be professionally reinforced.

  • Remove or anchor any loose objects on your property that could be moved or tossed by the wind, including trash cans, grills and outdoor furniture.

  • Have large or dying trees and branches removed by a professional as these could be blown onto your home.

High winds can come without advanced warning, but if you are proactive with the above suggestions, it could just mean the difference between no damage and extensive damage.

Also, if you are building a new home or renovating an older home, be sure the windows, walls and doors are up to building code for weather in your area.

If your home has been hit by damaging winds and resulting water damage, our highly trained specialists at SERVPRO® of South Bronx are here 247 to help with the cleanup and restoration of your home.
