Are you ready for winter to end? If so, you aren’t alone. A cold, dreary winter during a pandemic definitely has many of our friends and neighbors longing for warmer days and weather that lets us get outside and enjoy the sunshine.
Since March has arrived, our spring fever will be cured soon. For now, you may be spending some time planning what you’ll do when the weather. Why not also spend a little time planning your spring maintenance projects? It’s a good idea to plan for one of spring’s biggest weather threats—strong thunderstorms.
There’s nothing we can do to stop a strong or severe thunderstorm from hitting our neighborhood. But there’s plenty we can do to make sure our home is in the best position to weather these storms. Here’s how.

Be sure your roof is ready. Don’t let the first time you realize your shingles are loose or your roof is leaking be when it starts storming. Check for missing shingles and signs of leaks first. Repair them to keep your home safer.
Don’t forget to check your sump pump if you have one. Some homes and townhomes need one of these to regulate basement water levels. If yours does, be sure it’s ready to withstand storms.
Be sure your gutters aren’t cluttered with winter debris. Clean channels allow water around your home to flow the right way. When they’re full of trash, they can overflow and cause water damage.
Secure everything you can around your home. Items like patio furniture and grills can be blown around or over during a windy storm. If you can, find a way to secure these items not to see them damaged later.
