Defensible Space Is Wildfire Protection | SERVPRO® of South Bronx

It’s not something we often think about in and around The Bronx, but wildfires are more common, causing more property damage that you might realize. A wildfire can spread at alarming rates, especially since our world is made up of so many combustible materials.
We must do our part in protecting our homes to give us a fighting chance against wildfires. That can be as simple as being more careful.
But there are also other measures we can take, including defensible space.
Making a Plan
Defensible space sounds a little intimidating, but in reality, it’s a buffer area that you can create around your home. You can create this defensible space by removing anything that can feed a wildfire, things like dead trees or leaves.
This is why planting and pruning practices become important. You can also use flame-resistant gravel landscape to help lower your chances of being affected.
Defensible space can be thought of as a shield of protection around your home. It is helping slow down or stopping the spread of fire as it nears your home, and gives firefighters their best chance of stopping a wildfire before it takes over your home.
Because defensible space has proven to be effective, some states started requiring it by law. It isn’t required in our area, but if you own or rent a house, it may be worth investing in.
The Rising Hazards of Wildfires
There were over 59,000 wildfires across the United States in 2020. Every state was impacted.
California accounted for 10,000+, but the average number of wildfires per state in 2020 was right under 1,000. In New York, we fared better than most states with only 192 wildfires, but they burned 1,123 acres of land.
It’s imperative that home owners take the necessary actions to protect their home. Defensible space is one way of doing this.
