If you were to pull up to your home or apartment to see it in flames, your stomach might fall to the ground. We work hard to have nice things, and we work twice as hard (and spend a lot of money) to help keep them nice.
But while we might think we are acting in a safe way when it comes to protecting our homes from fire, more than a quarter of all reported fires are house fires.
So, stop what you’re doing and read over the top causes of house fires. Together, we can help bring the house fire numbers down.
Cooking. Most house fires start in the kitchen. And the leading cause of those fires is unattended cooking. Always be present, mentally and physically, when you’re cooking dinner.
Heating equipment. When the cold days of winter arrive, you want your heater working at its best. But heating systems of any kind can present a fire hazard if not maintained properly. Space heaters also present a particular hazard. If using a space heater, ensure you keep it away from anything flammable and in a location where it can’t be knocked over.
Electrical fires. These days, every room in the house contains electrical equipment. It’s important to understand the risks that these things present, like frayed cords or the overcrowding of outlets. If you’re living in an older house, have your electrical system checked out regularly.
Intentional fires. It may be hard to believe, but 28,000 intentional home fires are started every year. These aren’t fires set for legitimate reasons that get out of control; these are fires set on purpose with the intent of destruction.
Smoking materials. People smoking in their home is a personal choice, but if you do so, you should be aware that it is responsible for 5% of house fires and is the leading cause of fire deaths. It’s important to make sure cigarettes and other smoking materials have been completely put out before leaving the room or going to bed.
